Polyhýmnia/Πολυύμνια is a Hellenic divinity of etheric writing and intense introspection. Any religious hymn ever penned was said to be inspired by her via psithurisms of quiet knowing. Deeply multifaceted just like her sisters, her other domains include meditation, geometry, pantomime1, and even agriculture. Dance, lyric poetry, and eloquence were also attributed to her and other Muses like Terpsikhore, Erato, and Kalliope respectively. In ancient times, she was mainly invoked by mousopóloi/μουσοπόλοι (Muses devotees dedicated to the arts & sciences) who sought guidance in religious works of all kinds. As a mousopólos myself and mystic poet who writes devotional poetry, she is my most cherished Muse, which is why she is the first one in this Panoramic Muse Masterpost series.

Name Etymology

Polyhýmnia’s name stems from two Greek words:

poly/πολύ: “many”
&
hymnos/ὕμνος: “hymn” or “words of praise”

So, “The One of Many Hymns/Praises”

Key Traits

Polyhýmnia has been traditionally depicted as a pensive, meditative maiden with an overall stern demeanor. She usually was not shown cradling an instrument like her other eight sisters, but was instead painted or sculpted in a reflective pose and often draped in a sheer cloak or veil.

Beyond Sacred Hymns & Meditation

Polyhýmnia’s precedence over mystical poetry and the meditative state tends to overshadow her other disciplines. In fact, as a longtime devotee of hers, I didn’t always know about some of these aspects I’m about to mention! Her ties to agriculture are particularly intriguing.

Muse of Pantomime

The verse above refers to the Ares-orchestrated wedding of Kadmos (Phoenician prince, legendary hero, and founder of Thebes) and Harmonia (goddess of harmony), where the Nine Muses performed. There was a notable instance during the ceremony when Polyhýmnia wowed all the attendees with a heartfelt performance of expressive gestures that communicated profound meaning sans words.

And because the art of pantomime wordlessly conveys such moving narratives, it heavily relies on the eloquence and dance that she also presides over. Moreover, her introspective demeanor seamlessly aligns with the silent theatrical narration of pantomimists.

Muse of Agriculture

As mentioned earlier, Polyhýmnia is considered the mother of Triptolemos, a demigod who served as Demeter’s (goddess of agriculture) very first priest. But a more direct association is the fact that she has been deemed the inventor of the plough and the herald of agriculture by various mythographers.

In a more figurative sense, she is a goddess of the earth’s rhythms. Agriculture relies on the changing of seasons, so early philosophers considered her the inspirer of the cyclical nature of farming and harvesting (the sacred dance of agriculture, if you will).

In addition to the agricultural depiction above, the works of Eustache Le Sueur and Francesco del Cosa show her holding a plough or scythe.

Muse of Geometry

To the Ancient Greeks, geometry was a foundational sacred science. As such, its study required utmost contemplation and reverence that was synonymous with prayer. Her contemplative composure reflects the razor-sharp focus needed to solve geometric problems.

Devotional Acts for Polyhymnia

• meditate upon waking and/or before going to bed

• read mystical/sacred poetry and philosophical writings, especially by Greek writers

• write mystical/sacred poetry of your own

• engage in deep conversations, especially about spiritual topics

• daydream while looking up at the sky5

• study or tutor someone in geometry

• make art with geometric shapes using tools like compasses, protractors, and triangle rulers

• study agriculture and grow your own crops

• grow a plant in her name and speak to it lovingly

• learn how to play the lyre

• partake in silent storytelling

• dance your ancestral dances

Lesser-Known Associations & Facts

Divination

The Muses in general but especially Polyhýmnia were intrinsically linked to the prophetic centers of Ancient Greece (primarily Mount Parnassos, which was their main sanctuary, and Delphi). The Pythia (the high priestess of Delphi) drank from springs sacred to the Muses to induce a receptive state for divination. While not a literal goddess of divination itself, Polyhýmnia serves as the divine example of the inner stillness necessary to receive messages from the gods. Basically, she is a patroness of channeling, though not as directly as her Musagetes (Apollo).

Astronomy

Nine asteroids are named after the Muses. One of them, 33 Polyhymnia, is a high-density main belt asteroid that was discovered by French astronomer Jean Chacornac back in 1854. While there is some controversy surrounding this, there’s a decent chance this specific asteroid is comprised of heavy elements that aren’t even included in the periodic table!

Athená

Being a devotee of both the Muses and Athená, I couldn’t help but notice the uncanny similarities Athená shares with Polyhýmnia especially (apart from the fact that they are half-sisters, of course). Polyhýmnia’s air of spiritual intellectualism mirrors Athena’s domains of pronoia (forethought) and sophia (wisdom). In other words, I consider them divinities of gnosis (Polyhýmnia as its inspirer and Athená as its source)

Their similar contributions to a more cultured society can’t be denied either. Both Polyhymnia and Athená serve as guiding forces of agriculture, sciences, and higher learning — Polyhýmnia through her unwavering mindfulness and Athená through her logic and wit.

A Mousopólos/Μουσοπόλος was the divinely inspired artist in Ancient Greece that carried the spark of the Muses within their poetic hearts. This individual was a devotee of the nine Greek Muses by the mere act of picking up a kálamos/κάλαμος and pouring their soul upon parchment, serenading audiences to the heights of Mount Olympos, or masterfully plucking a lyre. A moniker such as this one was used by creators of most kinds (namely poets, bards, playwrights, musicians, and performers) to describe their sacred dedication to the arts and its inspirers.

Etymology of “Mousopolos”

Mousopólos is a compound word consisting of:

mousa/μοῦσα: muse

&

pólos/πόλος: stems from “polein” (to care for or serve)

Therefore, a mousopólos is “caretaker of the Muses” or “someone devoted to the Muses’ work.”

One of The Most Well-Known Mousopoloi

Poetry incarnate, Sapphṓ/Σαπφώ of Lesbos earned this title with flying colors. Only fragments of her masterpieces (aside from one full piece) may remain, but they have shaped the literary world all the the same and continue to impact it over two millennia later.

The first female mousopólos in the public eye, she was able to assert her own divine connection to the arts, which placed her work on par with that of male poets. In turn, this challenged the male-only tradition of poesy. But Sappho took it a monumental step further. She harnessed that attained authority to establish a poetic community guided by the Muses themselves, dubbing it Mousopólon Oikía. Here, young women were trained in the art of writing, performance, and music under the tutelage of Sappho and the inspirational ambiance of the Muses. One of her most substantial fragments actually mentions this space:

How to Be a Mousopolos in the Modern-Day

Everything ones creates (especially poetry, lyrics, and hymns) serves as a devotional act to the Muses in and of itself. Evoking the Muses before starting every creation is customary, especially via their Orphic hymn “To the Muses” or “Hymn to the Muse” by Mesomedes of Crete, which calls upon the eldest and most sought-after Muse, Kalliope.

While there are overlaps (i.e. lyrical poetry and lyre-playing), each Muse has her own primary domain. So, say you feel moved to write a sensual love poem, Erato would be the one to call upon for that. As for a piece that’s more melancholy, Melpomene. To deepen the devotion, don’t just dedicate creative endeavors in general to them, but create actual pieces about them. When it comes to the arts, they mostly preside over music, poetry, singing, and dancing, not drawing or handicrafts. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t paint a striking portrait of one of the Muses as a devotional act!

The art of creating is the offering of all offerings to these infinitely inspiritive divinities. However, Ancient Greeks would also pour libations of milk and honey prior to performing or creating art to ask for their incomparable divine inspiration.

The Musagetes: Another Related & Vital Deity to Pay Homage to on the Mousopolos Path

Apollo is the Muses’ mentor and is a deity of the arts himself. More specifically, he is the Musagétes/Mουσαγέτης (“Conductor of the Muses”), leading their choir and playing the lyre while they sing. The Muses are frequently depicted rejoicing around him.

The Muses serve as the direct source of inspiration for creative mortals, and Apollo represents the harmony and mastery of the arts that they so effortlessly inspire. So, just as a mousopólos would evoke and show their gratitude to the Muses, they would show the same reverence to the god of music and poetry.
